Direct tax was the biggest issue of the Ratification debates,
but probalby avoidable.

Calvin: I have read a huge number of the essays, newspaper articles,
etc. by federalists and antifederalists over ratification. I surely
never go the impression that the taxing power is "the single biggest
controversy" -- bigger than the AF demand for a bill of rights? bigger
than the federalist fear of anarchy without the Constitution or the AF
fear of tyranny with it? Unless you have actually quanified these
deabtes in some way I just don't see how you can make this argument.
So, what is the basis for this argument.
