The First Amendment during war

A small historical note. Free speech has not been restricted during all
or even the vast majority of shooting wars. Witness the war of 1812,
the Mexican war, the Spanish-American war, and, more complicated, World
War II. For a shameless plug asserting that civil rights and liberties
have been expanded as often as restricted during wartime, see my essay
in Tushnet, ed., The Constitution in Wartime.
