I certainly don't find Jim's argument frivolous (eveb as I am persuaded by the Dellinger argument). What this might point to is the fatal ambiguity )whether or not one views it as "emptiness") of the concept of equality. One of my favorite books has always been Doug Rae et al., Equalities, which argues that there are 128 logically coherent notions of equality. This means, among other things, that "interpretations" of "equality" are inevitably going to be value-laden.
