Cardozo was a Spanish, Sephardic Jew. From what I know of that community, being both Spanish and Jewish are crucial parts of the identify. What is crucial, however, is not the distinctive elements of being Spanish and Jewish, but rather, that being a Spanish Jew is something different from being a German Jew (or a Spanish Catholic).
