Iraqi and American democracy

No doubt this is a horribly shameless plug, but I am wondering whether
we might understand the treatment of women in the Iraqi constitution as
another "problem of constitutional evil" analogous to the treatment of
slavery in the original American constitution. Constitutions, in this
sense, are not blueprints of the good society but also arrangements by
which people who have deep disagreements can nevertheless share civic
space. From this perspective, the question is whether more feminist
Iraqis are better off cooperating with religious groups, going their
separate way or annihilating them. All these alternatives have costs.
