I think Iran can figure out that this President has squandered and
exhausted his military, resorting to coerced extensions of duty periods
to keep not nearly enough troops in Iraq to deal with the situation
there.

In 1994 or 1995, I was contacted at our DC office by a soldier whose
complaint was that his re-enlistment contract gave the Army the right to retain him
indefinitely in service.

Is this what you mean by coerced extensions of duty periods? If it is, then
I suppose we can all think another President for greasing those particular
skids.

If you are the leadership in Iran, and if you put yourself in Saddam's
place, would you really want to be in Saddam's place?

As for exhausting his military, the information on this score seems to be
mixed, at worst. Yes, there are tired soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines.
But lots of indications exist that what wears them done is stateside
naysaying and trepidations about commitment to the cause. So an Iranian with an ear
to the tent might conclude that the military is exhausted. But it takes no
genius to realize that highly effective, successful, military groups can be
made tired by the duration of their labors, yet still rise to the call of their
country.
