DEAN VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT:
Thomas Jefferson School of Law Seeks President and Dean
Thomas Jefferson School of Law, a fully ABA-accredited, nonprofit, independent law school in San Diego, invites applications and nominations for the combined position of President and Dean, starting July 1, 2005. TJSL has approximately 800 students and 32 full-time faculty, in a two-building campus in the historic Old Town district overlooking San Diego's harbor and scenic Cabrillo Point. With skyrocketing student quality and faculty productivity, TJSL is poised to achieve new heights as one of only three law schools in Southern California south and east of Orange County (a vast region larger than nine states, with a population of 4.8 million).
TJSL's faculty is dynamic, collegial, highly prolific, and diverse (a majority are women). More than two thirds have joined the faculty since 1996. The faculty has published more than two dozen books and 200 law review articles. The school sponsors the only annual Women and Law conference west of the Mississippi, and its annual Jefferson Lecture has been delivered by U.S. Supreme Court Justices in each of the last three years.
TJSL's student body is nationally based (the vast majority from outside California), with the annual entering class of around 200 selected from a rapidly growing pool of applicants, surpassing 4,000 annually. TJSL has recently completed a successful ABA site visit, receiving positive feedback from the site evaluation team. Students praise TJSL highly for its strong emphasis on individualized attention and support, and collegial environment.
The President and Dean will report directly to the Board of Trustees and will be charged with leading the school to even greater excellence in scholarship, teaching, and student achievement, fund-raising, managing finances and administration, and overall institutional advancement. The position includes appointment as full professor with tenure.
The factors to be considered by the search committee include the ability to lead and inspire an ambitious academic community, commitment to excellent scholarship, teaching, and diversity, and skill at fund-raising, community outreach, administration, and financial management. TJSL is an equal opportunity and affirmative action employer. Members of underrepresented groups are strongly encouraged to apply.
Applications and nominations should be sent to: Chair, Dean Search Committee, Thomas Jefferson School of Law, 2121 San Diego Avenue, San Diego, CA 92110. To ensure full consideration, applications and nominations should be received by October 1, 2004.
