To the extent that we're allowed to count enumerated powers constraints as a "flipside" or version of states rights, I nominate Hammer v. Dagenhart.

Allow me to pose a broader and more provocative question:

Can anyone point to an example in the history of the United States in which
a federalism / States' rights argument has been successfully deployed to
protect the individual liberties of a person in a specific, concrete and
meaningful way?

In posing this question, I do not simply invite citation to those cases in
which the Court has justified its federalism / States' rights decision with
speculation that permitting the federal government to act in a certain area
might lead to future abuses.  Nor do I invite citation to those cases in
which the Court reifies state sovereignty into a personified entity that is
inherently deserving of protection, such that the invasion of state
sovereignty is itself an "injury."  Rather, I invite citation to a case in
which the Court has prevented a specific, concrete abuse of individual
liberty by the federal government through the invocation of States' rights.

There are, of course, myriad examples in which the Court has permitted (or
even authorized) abuses of individual liberties through the invocation of
States' rights arguments.  Are there examples in which the Court has
invoked States' rights arguments to prevent such abuses?
