Civil War POW's were held in a variety of facilities in the North. Fort
Lafayette in New York held Confederate prisoners from 1861 until 1866, for
example, including both civilians arrested in the North and soldiers
captured in the South. According to "Portals of Hell: Military Prisons of
the Civil War," POWs were held in over 150 facilities up-and-down the East
coast and in the upper midwest, including preexisting city jails, coastal
forts, and converted barracks.
