*  EMORY UNIVERSITY OFFICIALS and Michael A. Bellesiles, a
   history professor there who has come under fire for the
   research behind his book on gun ownership in colonial
   America, announced Thursday that they have requested a formal
   investigation of the allegations of research misconduct
   against him.

*  THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF SCHOLARS issued a statement on
   Wednesday questioning the timing and political motivations of
   organizations that are raising concerns about academic
