C.S. Lewis wrote an essay on this subject at the outbreak of World War II
called "Learning in Wartime," in which addresses the question of how to
justify studying biology and literature and mathematics, whatever, during
war. It's an excellent essay, originally an address to the students. It's
written from a Christian perspective, so that aspect of it might not appeal
to all. But by and large it's very helpful.
