standing in Tuan Anh Nguyen

I have a question about standing in Tuan Anh Nguyen v. INS.  In that case,
the illegitimate child of a Vietnamese mother and an American father who
was born in Vietnam  was denied American citizenship, althoughhe would have
been an American citizen by statute if his father had been Vietnamese and
his mother American.  to make a very long story short,  Justice Kennedy and
O'Connor reached the merits of the case only because the fathrer was a
party to the case.

I know I must be missing something obvious, but where is the father's
injury in fact?
