EUGENE'S CONCERNS ABOUT IMPOSING AMERICAN IDEALS ON A DEEPLY ISLAMIC COUNTRY

        I agree with the expressions of doubt we have had about the chances of
succeeding in any effort to impose American ideals on a deeply Islamic
culture abroad.  On the other hand, I would find it hard to share any
concern about cultural insensitivity or arrogance.  Being considerate of
the culture of people who really need reconstructing, whom we have bombed
to smithereens, and who have taught their children to hate and kill us even
before we bombed them to smithereens, would somehow seem to me to miss the
point.
