This is not on the word "progress," but the classic work on how the
framers decided to handle the future, social change, the growth of the
country, and the (in)flexibility of the Constitution is Philip Hamburger's
ca. 1988 Michigan Law Review article on the Framer's Accommodation of
Social Change.
