Research request re: slippery slopes, sound decision, sound distinctions

For my slippery slopes article, I'm looking for a quote that I heard
attributed (misattributed?) to Maitland; Maitland is said to have responded
against a slippery slope argument by saying something like "the genlteman is
telling us that we should not make a sound decision today for fear of having
to make a sound distinction tomorrow."

As you might gather, this is just a distant approximation, and a few
queries of my own haven't unearthed this; the usually very reliable UCLA Law
Library couldn't find anything so far. I wonder whether anyone on the list
might be of help. Please e-mail me off-list, if you have any pointers for
me. Thanks!

    Eugene
