Many of the posts in this discussion have described Mr. Ashcroft as out of
the "mainstream." First, what, specifically, justifies this
characterization? Opposition to abortion? A huge portion of the country
holds the same views regarding abortion as Mr. Ashcroft. Are they part of
the mainstream? Apparently not. What about his opposition to affirmative
action and the like? Again, a large number of people in this country agree
with his views. I assume those folks aren't part of the "mainstream"
either. It seems to me that "mainstream" is really being used to mean "what
the Democratic party supports," and anyone who disagrees with that is
disqualified. Is this tolerance? Openmindedness? Diversity?
