I think we do our society a great disservice when we put down
aspirations in the name of honesty.  (I also think we do this when we
talk about people as if money or narrow self interest is all that
matters to them.) Such talk legitimates "bad actions."  While I disagree
with Rawl's desire to keep religious talk out of politics, I do agree
that we should strive to discuss political (and judicial) decisions in
public and  in reasonable, human-valuing terms.  To quote a more Jewish
aphorism, as the sage Hillel said "If I am not for myself, who will be
for me; but being for myself alone, what am I; and if not now, when?"
