What backlash?

The Washington Times (9/4/00) reports that the Boy
Scouts are doing better than ever in the wake of the
Dale litigation. Membership has grown to record
levels--6.2 million (5 million boys and 1.2 million
adults)--and, remarkably, the fastest growing BSA
chapter is the *San Francisco Bay Area Council,* which
has grown by 28% in just the last two years.
Greg Shields, a BSA spokesman, suggested that the
group's commitment to traditional values may explain
its phenomenal growth in the face of so much
opposition from outsiders: "We're not a recreation
program. Our mission is to help people's character
grow and to make ethical decisions. The Boy Scouts
does not expect everyone to agree with our values and
beliefs...but we feel strongly parents want their
children exposed to the kinds of things the Boy Scouts
are teaching." Amen!
Shields also stated that although some institutions
have withdrawn their financial support of BSA, "there
have always been other groups to replace those that
withdrew their support."
The picture this story paints is of a thriving youth
organization that is stronger than ever, perhaps
because it stood up for values shared by many families
and institutions. The reports of the demise of BSA
were not only premature, it seems they were completely
erroneous! --Rick Duncan
