I think that speech endorsing racial supremacy is, if not "sui generis,"
than pretty close.  I think that the state clearly has a right to
denounce racist acts even if those acts are constitutionally protected
(such as Ku Klux Klan marches).  I also see no constituitonal problem
with the state buying billboards saying, "The people of Missouri believe
that abortion is murder, and we condemn the Supreme Court for failing to
see this obvious fact."

I (Leslie) write:

Is there no problem with taxing people to pay for a message they
disagree with (coercing their speech, as it were).  Wouldn't the state
be obliged to have a little check-off on state tax forms , as we do for
presidential races, allowing one's taxes to be used to express X message
or messages in general?  Would you feel the same about the state's
putting this message on all auto license plates?  Is the tax-rented
billboard so different?
