| About Amigos de UCLA | ||||||||||||||||||||||
|
Amigos de UCLA is the oldest and longest running Community Service Commission tutorial project at UCLA. Amigos de UCLA started out as Amigos del Barrio in 1962 working with low income communities in Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico. As the years passed, the project changed its focus on the local community and its needs. We work with Pio Pico Elementary which is predominantly Latino. Amigos de UCLA goes to site on Wednesday and Thursday of every week, starting the first week of each quarter, and runs from 3pm to 5pm on these two days. The program emphasizes tutoring, one-on-one mentoring, and multicultural arts and crafts. The tutors assist students on their homework or academic skills during the first hour of site. During the second hour students engage in an arts and crafts project to learn about various cultures, as well as their own. The students are exposed to arts and crafts that range from the Americas, Asia, Africa, and Europe.
